Wrangel Island, Chukotka and Bering Sea
14 day voyage 8 to 10 days kayaking ~ Grade Moderate
Wild mountain landscapes, remote tundra, indigenous cultures and profuse wildlife draw us deep into the Russian Arctic. Ancient tundra on the Kolyluchinskaya Estuary is home to prolific birdlife and wildflowers. Dramatic cliffs swarming with sea birds, walrus breeding sites and one of the world’s main denning areas for polar bears entice us through the Bering Strait and across the Arctic Circle to Wrangel Island Nature Reserve. Nearly 24 hours' daylight and the Arctic pack ice provide a magical backdrop. We explore the rugged Chukotka coast and visit Chukchi villages where a traditional lifestyle of fishing, hunting and herding reindeer is still practiced. We watch for orcas and whales as we return through Bering Strait via the Diomedes Islands. Very few have been privileged to kayak in these waters. Don’t miss this one!
